TRAFFIC UNIT
Working With Our Community to Make Our Streets Safer

The Traffic Unit of the Plantation Police Department is staffed with eight Motorcycle Officers, one Expert DUI / Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Officer, one Sergeant and one Community Service Aide (CSA). There are thirty School Crossing Guards that are assigned to the Traffic Unit and work all the crossing guard posts throughout the city to keep children safe going to and from school. The Traffic Unit also consists of two Volunteer Parking Enforcement Specialists that enforce handicap and other parking violations throughout the city.

The Plantation Police Department is one of the few agencies in the area to have a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). DRE’s must be court certified as expert witnesses in drug recognition. The certification process is lengthy and requires the officer to demonstrate expertise in this area.

The Traffic Unit is not just responsible for enforcing traffic laws; the unit’s responsibilities include investigating vehicle related accidents, including Traffic Homicide Investigations, along with DUI (driving under the influence) checkpoints aimed at deterring impaired drivers, and vehicle safety checkpoints. The Traffic Unit also utilizes various forms of speed measuring devices to identify and apprehend all other of traffic violations. The unit has initiated or participated in a number of programs intended to prevent accidents and make the streets safer to include the "Click It or Ticket program," "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose program," and the Traffic Calming program.
