PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Public Education and Public Awareness are among the many services we provide to the residents of Plantation. The Fire Department offers a wide variety of public education programs.

Fire Safety for Kids
This program, taught by our own "Firefighter Tony," teaches kids about fire prevention and fire awareness. Concepts such as "Stop, Drop and Roll," Escape Death in the Home (EDITH) and how to dial 9-1-1 are all covered in a fun and entertaining way.

Fire Safety for Schools
Firefighter Tony is also available for school programs to introduce the same concepts in a classroom setting.

Fire Extinguisher Awareness
Having a fire extinguisher on the wall of your office is a good thing, but do you know how to use it? Is it the right type? Do you know what it's there for? The Fire Education staff of the Plantation Fire Department will help provide the answers to these and other important questions about fire extinguishers. Our Fire Extinguisher program is an interactive, hands-on program that's fun, exciting and informative.

For more details, or to schedule a program contact Lt. Tony Martin at 797-2150 during business hours or via e-mail at tmartins@psd.plantation.org.

Citizen CPR
With the support of the American Heart Association (AHA), the Plantation Fire Department offers the Friends & Family CPR program. This four-hour course teaches attendees how to recognize an emergency and respond accordingly. Students learn the basic concepts of CPR for adults, infants and children.

The course is offered to Plantation residents, one evening each month at the Plantation Police Department Community Outreach Center. Students receive a certificate of attendance and a manual. There is no charge for this program. To register, contact Lynn Braden at 916-5601.

CPR for Schools
This is a brand new program from the AHA. It is specifically designed for teachers, faculty and students. The program covers the same materials as Friends and Family above with the emphasis on a younger age group.

Heartsaver AED
Have you installed an automatic defibrillator in your business or community center? If not you should. Statistics show, the chances for survival of cardiac arrest increase dramatically when an AED is available and someone is properly trained to use it.

The Plantation Fire Department offers a four-hour program that teaches both CPR for adults and the use of automatic defibrillators. The course is fun, entertaining and should be part of every corporate training program or anywhere older adults congregate.

Chest Pain Awareness
You've just returned from a luncheon date. Suddenly you notice a nagging sensation in your chest. It seems to be getting stronger. Are you in trouble? Should you call your doctor or 9-1-1?

Get the simple answers to these complicated questions and a better understanding of heart disease and how it affects you.

Our Chest Pain Awareness program offers a light-hearted approach to a serious subject - Heart Attack. Learn how to recognize the early warning signs, what to do and how to avoid panic and misunderstanding.

For information on this program, contact Battalion Chief Joel Gordon at 797-2150 or e-mail him at jgordon@psd.plantation.org.
