Plantation Volunteer Fire Association Annual BBQ

The Plantation Volunteer Fire Association will host its 55th Annual Barbecue on Sunday, November 6th from 12:00 noon to 5:00 P.M.

“The annual barbecue is one of the largest and oldest city-wide traditions.

The half-century old event will be held at Pine Island Park, 300 South Pine Island Road, in Plantation.

The program offers live music, kids games, bounce houses, raffle prizes, live demonstrations and much more.

The traditional menu features ribs, chicken, beans, and cole slaw. Firehouse Subs will be providing freshly baked cookies for dessert.

As part of the program, Head Chef Barry Stearns has maintained the urban legend surrounding Former Mayor, Frank Veltri’s “Secret Sauce.”

This year’s event is being co-sponsored by Firehouse Subs, National Beverage, and T.M. Ralph Funeral Homes as well as several other local businesses.

The firefighters begin cooking at six in the morning and continue throughout the day.

Each year the firefighters prepare more than 3600 pounds of chicken and ribs, 750 pounds of cole slaw, 175 dozen dinner rolls, 70 industrial sized cans of baked beans and 225 dozen cookies for dessert.  Additionally the shopping list includes more than 500 pounds of ice and 3300 pounds of charcoal.

There are also a wide variety of beverages available for additional purchase.

A special kid’s hot dog meal is also available instead of the ribs and chicken.

Letters are mailed to every known resident in the City offering the purchase of tickets at $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children.

Tickets may also be purchased by calling Fire Administration at 954-797-2150, or on Sunday, at the gate.  The barbecue is held every year, rain or shine.  “Take-away” plates are also available.
