Training Division

The Plantation Fire Department’s Training Division plays an active and aggressive role in keeping the 250 firefighters, EMTs and paramedics up to date as well as recruiting and introducing new members to the basics of firefighting.



The Training Division consists of a Training Division Chief, a Captain, and a Basic Training Coordinator.  They oversee and coordinate the 180 hour, Firefighter One course offered three times each year, as well as the modular recertification program, regular company drills, EMT and paramedic recertification, EMS in-service training, first responder and CPR programs.

Firefighters in trainingFirefighter One is a State certified, program taught three times a year with each “new recruit class.”  In this program “bluetips” (Probationary Firefighters) are taught the basic techniques of firefighting, search and rescue, extrication, air packs and department procedures.  They are also taught the 40-hour Department of Transportation, First Responder course.  This program is a precursor to the 200-hour, Firefighter Two course.

The Modular recertification program ensures each firefighter stays up to date on all their required skills.

The program has a total of nine (9) modules that review department policies, hose lays, ladders, air packs, search and rescue techniques, high-rise procedures, forcible entry, and First Responder skills.

Every year, In September, each member of the department, is tested on his or her skills and knowledge.  To remain active the candidate must perform to the established standards.

Formal certification classes are presented on a semi-annual basis.  These classes include CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support, and Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Providers (PEPP).
